Your ERAS photo is the first thing a program director sees. It sits next to your name on every application you send, so getting it right matters — and the technical requirements are stricter than most applicants expect.

The exact ERAS photo specifications

The AAMC specifies the photo as:

  • Dimensions: 2.5 x 3.5 inches (375 x 525 pixels at 150 DPI)
  • File size: under 150 KB
  • Format: JPEG is the safest choice
  • Color: color photo, not black and white
  • Framing: head and shoulders, facing the camera
  • Background: plain, light-colored background — white or off-white is standard
  • Recency: a recent photo that looks like you on interview day

If your file is over 150 KB or the dimensions are off, the photo section of your ERAS application will not accept it. Most phone photos fail on the first upload simply because they are several megabytes and far larger than 2.5 x 3.5 in.

How to make your photo compliant in minutes

  1. Start from a sharp original. Any recent headshot works — a phone photo taken in good window light is fine. You do not need a studio.
  2. Crop to head and shoulders. Keep your face centered, eyes roughly in the upper third of the frame, with some space above your head.
  3. Resize to exactly 2.5 x 3.5 inches at 150 DPI. This is 375 x 525 pixels. Stretching instead of cropping distorts faces — always crop first, then resize.
  4. Compress under 150 KB. JPEG quality around 80–90 keeps a clean photo well under the limit. Watch for compression artifacts around edges before you finish.
  5. Check the result at actual size. Zoom out and look at it small — that is how programs will see it. Your face should be clearly readable, not grainy.

The mistakes we see most

  • Dark or busy backgrounds. Program portals show the photo small. A patterned or dark background makes you hard to see.
  • Sunglasses, hats, or heavy filters. Skip them. This is a professional headshot, not a social profile.
  • An obviously outdated photo. If you no longer look like the photo, retake it. Interviewers notice.
  • Wrong file size. This is the single most common reason uploads fail — resize and compress before you open ERAS.

Attire and presentation

Wear what you would wear to an interview: a suit jacket, blazer, or professional top. Neutral colors photograph best against a white background. Keep makeup and grooming simple and natural. Smile lightly — approachable, not casual.
